An 80-year-old Waseca man has been recognized by the Guinness World Records for being the oldest known person with Down syndrome.

Tribune reporterJust past the massive bin holding the ruins of Steve Furlan’s condo from the last time the Des Plaines River flooded, the water was rising again.

Tribune reportersThe blustery blend of snow, ice and freezing temperatures gave way Friday to the specter of a new threat: severe rain and flooding that experts caution could swell rivers and waterlog roads throughout the region.

Tribune reportersShammrie Brown was sure he would have to drop out of Aurora University when he learned that he couldn’t register for next semester without paying the balance of his tuition.

How Sahar Daftary’s death fall exposed polygamy in Britain

Posted by enrictesano on January 2, 2009

cw, Canterbury, UK Polygamy, like female genital mutilation, the hijab and the burka, sequestration at home, the prohibition on forming relationships with men other than husbands and brothers, stonings to death for alleged adultery, is just another aspect of the oppression of women in Islam.

Josh, Houston, TX, USA This is one more wake up call to the whole western world – look at what is ahead – DIVISION – separate legal systems to placate a religious group that refuses where ever they go to assimiulate into the countries that open their arms and take them in – in the end they will FORCE YOU to SUBMIT to them rm, pv, usa All this anger is because it involves Islam.

Leigh Vernier, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia the tradition arose because many men were killed in wars and Mohammad said that men should take care of the widows and families by marrying them It has lasted for hundreds of years and there is no justification for it today and it is just a licence for to be bigamous It is not beneficial to women bill, ely, The Mnuslim Parliament of Great Britain indeed!!.

However the prophet did show the example for what islam thinks of women marrying a 4 or 7 year old I have forgotten which age E.Beal, Toulouse, France Yet again irrespective of the religion in question, it is the woman who is the victim. It underlines the extreme hypocracy underlying Islam that under any circumstances a man is allowed to marry 4 woman.

Europe’s 10bn euro space vision

Posted by enrictesano on January 2, 2009

To that end, the minister wants it to become less of a scientific or industrial “club”, and to become more focussed on the services it delivers to taxpayers.

Important programmes to receive investment from France at the meeting in The Hague will include the environmental monitoring initiative known as GMES (Global Monitoring for Environment and Security) which aims to build a full picture of the state of the planet from satellite and ground-based data.

As well as being a lead nation in Esa, France currently holds the presidency of the European Union; and over the past few months Mrs Pecresse has attempted to steer both organisations on to a similar track.

But, in the end I think, what is important is Esa working for the European Union, in which the member states have a political vision of what is the use of space for European citizens; and the use of space for European citizens is how space applications improve our daily lives.”

UPDATE 2-French power cut shows southeast vulnerable-Govt

Posted by enrictesano on January 2, 2009

Although the 1,500-megawatt outage was triggered by storms,

it was the proof that the region suffered from a structural

vulnerability, the ministry said in a press release.

“This is why the State Minister is calling for a working

meeting in the next two weeks to examine measures to secure

power supply in the region,” the ministry added.

The region affected to varying degrees by the cut includes

the four cities of Marseille, Nice, Avignon and Toulon and has a

population of more than 4 million people.

The grid has long tried to secure electricity supply in the

region but its attempts have failed in the face of fierce

French Debate: Ligue 1 Team Of 2008/09 – The First Half

Posted by enrictesano on January 1, 2009

Having settled quickly after a summer move from Toulouse, the 28 year-old stopper appears to be coming into his prime, conceding only 13 goals in the first half of the season, four of which came against Olympique de Marseille in the opening game of the term.Honourable mentions: Hugo Lloris (Olympique Lyonnais), Yohann Pelé (Le Mans), Steve Mandanda (Olympique de Marseille)Left-backAn injury crisis has not been allowed to badly hamper the progress of Lorient this season as many of their first team players have stepped forward to take extra responsibility.

Generally used as a left-back, the 23 year-old already has three goals and two assists for the season and is slowly catching the eye of some of the biggest clubs.Honourable mentions: Fabio Grosso (Olympique Lyonnais), Sylvain Armand (Paris Saint-Germain)Right-backDespite the continued emergence of Rod Fanni at Stade Rennais, the outstanding right-back in Ligue 1 during the early part of the season has been Paris Saint-Germain’s Brazilian, Ceara.

The only player to get near him in the early part of the season has been Juninho of Olympique Lyonnais, although there are a number of players a level down from these two who have impressed.Honourable mentions: Juninho (Olympique Lyonnais), Yohan Cabaye (Lille OSC), Mickaël Pagis (Stade Rennais), Gervinho (Le Mans), Fabrice Abriel (Lorient)Left MidfielderLike the attacking midfield role, there is only one outstanding contender for the spot on the left, Lille’s Brazilian winger Michel Bastos.

His contribution to Lyon’s cause is only truly noticed when he is not playing as the slump in the side’s form can be alarming.Several other strikers have enjoyed terrific starts to the season and, for this reason, it is very difficult to pick out the final member of this elite eleven.

A Christmas poem: ‘Ho! Ho! Ho! Merry bailouts’

Posted by enrictesano on January 1, 2009

Twas the night before Christmas with the world in recession, And Michigan buried ‘neath a one-state Depression. The factories were closed by the car companies in fear That no money from Washington would arrive ’til next year.On Wall Street the brokers were packing briefcases And shuffling to subways with very long faces. The Dow Jones had fallen to another record low, And three banks were in ‘ruptcy, where else could they go’Of course Freddie and Fannie were snug in their bed, And not by coincidence their quilt was bright red.A third shape, between them, was watching the two.

‘Twas their Uncle Sam, to tell them what they could — and could not — do.The insurers and bankers had all written their listsBut weren’t too excited since they’d already got gifts. The Treasury money that bailed out their firmsHad come back in October, pretty much without terms. But deep in Detroit, there was a chill in the air, Because money was tight and cupboards were bare.(It was especially cold in the Wayne County Jail, Where a certain large inmate proved nobody was ‘too big to fail.’)The town always hurt when car sales were slow, When people couldn’t get credit and didn’t have dough. The numbers for GM were nowhere near quotas Why, the industry slump had even hammered Toyota. The ripple effects were felt far and wide, As jobs disappeared and pension plans died. You would pack up your kids and gather your spouse To get out of town — if you could just sell your house. But then what through this gloom should appear in the sky’Was it a sled, with a driver, a bearded fat guy’Indeed it was Santa all jolly in red Making his rounds while all were in bed.The sled was quite heavy from the bags in the back Not loaded with toys, but laden with ‘jack.”I’ve got Washingtons, Lincolns, Jacksons and moreFranklins, Hamiltons and Grants by the score. If you’ve got money trouble, well I guess you’re in luck Why even this sleigh is pulled by eight bucks. My printer’s been running since early this fall.

I’ve got the gifts — in a size that fits all.’And so he delivered a bail-out to folks ‘cross the land,Especially those out of work, most in need of a hand. But this wasn’t top down, for the bigwigs in banks.

It was more bottom-up, to folks who said ‘thanks.’And Santa made clear to avoid all confusion That these lumps of cash were a onetime infusion.’By next year,’ he said as the gifts were imparted, ‘I fully expect your recovery will have started.’And then he jumped in his sleigh and rose into the night, Calling ‘To all, Merry Christmas’ as he raced out of sight. And like so many others who had assessed the situation, He left the long-term fixes to the Obama administration.— With best wishes for ‘09 from Free Press Editorial Page Editor Ron Dzwonkowski.
